Portland - the city that doesn't give a f. I always heard the term "grunge" whenever someone referred to the city of Portland. After visiting Bridge City this past weekend, I would argue grunge is not the correct term to describe the city and its people. For the most part, the fashion and overall vibe is very similar to San Francisco. Casual, comfortable mixed with hip and trendy. Everyone we encounter didn't seem to care about impressing others....they just lived their life and kept it casual. I believe a better tag line is "Portland, the city that doesn't take life too seriously". Which coming from San Franciscio was very humbling. core40 Noe-Mission, located in a beautifully restored church on Cesar Chavez, ranks in my top 5 fitness studios to date! For those who have never taken a megaformer class - the first class is $10. And it's only 40 minutes! My type of church service 🙏🏻
Nestled between hipster mecca Silver Lake and downtown L.A., Echo Park -- one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and a longtime enclave for artists, writers, and musicians -- has become a destination in its own right. But save plenty of time to check out the new shops and restaurants, which are bringing fresh life and style to Echo Park while preserving its bohemian spirit. Grab a croissant from local-food purveyor Cookbook and then spend a few hours bouncing between chic design shops, quirky boutiques, and epicurean hot spots. Where to go & what to eat:
At Gracias Madre, their mission is to celebrate and serve the presence of the mother which resides above us, within our hearts, within the earth, and in all those who nurture us. They serve cuisine inspired by the kitchens of Mexico sourced from locally grown organic ingredients. Vegan or non-vegan, with the traditional Mexican courses, this is a great starter restaurant. The interior design is top notch - would be worth coming just for a drink on the patio! Sister to Cafe Gratitude, this place is a serious treat.
The Griffith Observatory is one of L.A.’s greatest cultural attractions, offering spectacular views from the Pacific Ocean to Downtown L.A. from its perch on Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park. We accessed the park via a private gate in the Los Felix hills but there are many alternatives - both to drive to the top or park and hike up. Unfortunately it was a pretty hazy day but I can imagine this would be a perfect hike after a solid day of rain.
We visit Santa Barbara often, so please visit my other posts on this beautiful, beach town. On our recent trip to the Central Coast, we stopped by SB on our way back for lunch and a stretch. La Super Rica Taqueria "La Super Rica Taqueria, in Santa Barbara, California, Julia Child’s favorite restaurant late in life" Handlebar Coffee Roasters
Hipster meets Santa Barbara surfers Surrounded by ranches, farms and vineyards at the northern “entry” to the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos (population 1,890) is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135 (the main thoroughfare known as Bell Street) It’s only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876, two ranchers each donated part of their land to create the town site. Named Los Alamos (Spanish for “the cottonwoods” that still grace the area) it looks and feels vintage yet with a burgeoning food, wine, arts & antiques scene. Where to Stay:
If you like small town, crunchy-beach vibe and fog....you will love this small oceanfront town, due West of SLO. Morro Bay is tough to miss. It's that beach burg off Highway 1 where the 576-foot rock (actually a volcanic landform) looms offshore. The rock is colossal, the vibe very small-town — the sort of charm I've come to expect in communities along the Central California coast. See previous posts on Morro Bay for places to stay and eat.
"This updated neighborhood doesn’t have to try hard to be interesting, original, surprising, and modern—it just is. The youthful, health-conscious feel is embedded in the city’s DNA. It’s the headquarters of surf giant Hurley and the former home of Quiksilver. Busy 17th Street, lined with popular, instagram-worthy restaurants and exercise studios, is well within walking and biking distance of the modest, post-WWII homes that young families have renovated to feel very "Venice Beach."
