Portland - the city that doesn't give a f. I always heard the term "grunge" whenever someone referred to the city of Portland. After visiting Bridge City this past weekend, I would argue grunge is not the correct term to describe the city and its people. For the most part, the fashion and overall vibe is very similar to San Francisco. Casual, comfortable mixed with hip and trendy. Everyone we encounter didn't seem to care about impressing others....they just lived their life and kept it casual. I believe a better tag line is "Portland, the city that doesn't take life too seriously". Which coming from San Franciscio was very humbling. Surrounded by ranches, farms and vineyards at the northern “entry” to the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos (population 1,890) is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135 (the main thoroughfare known as Bell Street) It’s only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876, two ranchers each donated part of their land to create the town site. Named Los Alamos (Spanish for “the cottonwoods” that still grace the area) it looks and feels vintage yet with a burgeoning food, wine, arts & antiques scene. Where to Stay:
If you like small town, crunchy-beach vibe and fog....you will love this small oceanfront town, due West of SLO. Morro Bay is tough to miss. It's that beach burg off Highway 1 where the 576-foot rock (actually a volcanic landform) looms offshore. The rock is colossal, the vibe very small-town — the sort of charm I've come to expect in communities along the Central California coast. See previous posts on Morro Bay for places to stay and eat.
After a recent trip to Joshua Tree, I was inspired to find more "hippie" towns here in California. So much of this state has been built up with wealth, these smaller towns are hidden gems. On a weekend trip to Santa Barbara, we decided spontaneously to veer east towards Ojai off the 101. We only spent a day here (in July aka HOT HOT HOT), so I am sure there is more to do/see. Will need to go back and explore more. Thanks to my Pinterest board for finding some of these beautiful stores and restaurants! Where to Eat:

The Central Coast has a special place in my heart. Big Sur is beautiful and obviously is one of the top destinations in California - maybe even the entire country. However, the coast between Big Sur and Santa Barbara is often overlooked. With our upcoming annual camping trip to Montana de Oro, here is a weekend guide to one of my favorite destinations: Where to Eat:
