Nestled between hipster mecca Silver Lake and downtown L.A., Echo Park -- one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and a longtime enclave for artists, writers, and musicians -- has become a destination in its own right. But save plenty of time to check out the new shops and restaurants, which are bringing fresh life and style to Echo Park while preserving its bohemian spirit. Grab a croissant from local-food purveyor Cookbook and then spend a few hours bouncing between chic design shops, quirky boutiques, and epicurean hot spots. Where to go & what to eat:

The Griffith Observatory is one of L.A.’s greatest cultural attractions, offering spectacular views from the Pacific Ocean to Downtown L.A. from its perch on Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park. We accessed the park via a private gate in the Los Felix hills but there are many alternatives - both to drive to the top or park and hike up. Unfortunately it was a pretty hazy day but I can imagine this would be a perfect hike after a solid day of rain.
"This updated neighborhood doesn’t have to try hard to be interesting, original, surprising, and modern—it just is. The youthful, health-conscious feel is embedded in the city’s DNA. It’s the headquarters of surf giant Hurley and the former home of Quiksilver. Busy 17th Street, lined with popular, instagram-worthy restaurants and exercise studios, is well within walking and biking distance of the modest, post-WWII homes that young families have renovated to feel very "Venice Beach."
